History of the

VBR-P94

Van Bruaene Rik Metalworking

Research and development Although Mr. Rik Van Bruaene made schematics of handguns at young age, the first contact with a real pistol came in the Belgian Army where the Browning Hi-Power 9mm was the standard personal sidearm. After the army, he get a Browning Hi-Power as a gift from his mom. That Belgian Browning Hi-Power was always his favorite pistol, until he was faced with the Glock 17. Impressed about the performance of the Glock 17, Mr. Rik Van Bruaene started his own research for an new striker fired pistol in the year 1994. The VBR-Belgium P94 was a conventional 9x19mm striker fired pistol with a 18 rounds magazine capacity. The VBR-Belgium P94 pistol had not much in common with the Belgian Browning Hi-Power and was rather an assembly of new ideas impressed and redesigned from the Glock 17. As for example, a bigger trigger guard, a bigger barrel-grip angle then the Hi-Power, Higher magazine capacity, striker fired trigger action. Together with the evaluation of the VBR-Belgium P94 pistol started also the first investigations concerning a possible replacement cartridge who could satisfy to the NATO CRISAT demands. (Collaborative Research Into Small Arms Technology). The experimental 5.7x19mm cartridge use a 55 grains .224 FMJ bullet fitted in a pressed propellant and surrounded by a special 9x19mm case similar to a 9x19 blank case. The idea of the new VBR-Belgium P94 with the 5.7x19mm ammunition was also presented to Dynamit Nobel. Only at that time Heckler & Koch and Dynamit Nobel worked on there own casless ammunition pistol in the 4.6 mm caliber. Due to the refusal of Dynamit Nobel and the rejection of this type of ammunition other ammunition concepts where studied using more conventional operation techniques. Several designers have designed a bottle necked 5.7 cartridges based on a 9 mm case. VBR-Belgium had also such experimental caliber which was called the 5.7x24.5 mm caliber… Well… sorry... Been there … done that!  The concept of small caliber replacement barres has possibilities but also his limits. And the limits are “STOPPING POWER” The VBR-Belgium P94 with the first VBR 9mm AP ammunition. After some serious evaluation Mr. Van Bruaene came to the conclusion. If the 9x19mm caliber can by the use of some special bullet technology satisfy to the NATO CRISAT demands, it will never be replaced regardless with how many efforts the 5.7x28mm and 4.6x30mm advocates try to push on it. .
