VBR-223 Assault rifle

Research and development In the year 1989, the bull-pub design assault rifles came popular and also Mr. Rik Van Bruaene did start the research and development for a bull-pub design assault rifle. Although the first drawings were made for the .308 NATO caliber, the project has been adapted for the .223 NATO caliber, in order to fulfill a roll as Assault rifle. At 1989 the Belgian Army had only the FAL in the .308 NATO caliber and de FNC in the .223 NATO caliber, while France had the FAMAS bull-pub, the Austrians the AUG bull-pub and the United Kingdom the L85A1 bull-pub rifle designs. Rik Van Bruaene wanted also to have a 223 Bull-pub assault rifle design ready. The VBR-Belgium prototype of the .223 Assault rifle was rather an experiment with different new techniques like an active stabilizer to compensate muzzle jump. The project brought insight in the advantages and disadvantages of the bull-pub design with traditional cased ammunition. The main parts of the VBR-Belgium .223 Assault rifle, the upper and lower frame with the bold. One of the design objectives was developing an assault rifle that could be built on standard metalworking machines. Therefor the design of all parts are specially developed so that they can be manufactured at every metal workshop A special design requires also a special breech that fits in the housing of the lower frame. While most bolt assemblies have round forms, the bolt assembly of the VBR-Belgium .223 Assault rifles is rather angular to fit in the metal lower frame.The magazine was a standard M16 magazine The VBR-.223 Assault rifle Mr. Rik Van Bruaene designer of the VBR.223 assault rifle.
