History of the

VBR-Belgium PDW Sidearm

Van Bruaene Rik Metalworking

Rik Van Bruaene & NATO  In the year 2000, Mr. Rik Van Bruaene was working on the research and development of new ammunition which could satisfy to the NATO-CRISAT demands (Collaborative Research Into Small Arms Technology). While the Combination Submachine Gun (C-SMG) caught the attention of the NATOs Land Armament Section, Mr. Rik Van Bruaene worked also on different Personal Defense Weapon designs (PDWs) with the objective to participate on NATOs CRISAT program. In the year 2002 Mr. Rik Van Bruaene had already developed his new 5.7x9x19mm Armor Piercing ammunition for the C-SMG and started the development of a new PDW (Personal Defense Weapon) in the 9x19mm caliber which was intent to satisfy to the first PDW requirements of NATO from of the end 1980s. These requirements where a PDW which can replace the pistol in all his function and with an effective range to 100 meters. This new PDW was designed and manufactured in Roeselare (Belgium) and was immediately designed as a sidearm to replace the pistol in all his functions and with a higher accuracy at midrange. The futuristic look of the VBR PDW Sidearm was based on earlier PDW designs and adapted to draw the PDW out a holster, just as the military pistol. . Convinced of the importance of a compact pistol for concealed carry, the PDW-Sidearm should be the companion weapon with interchangeable magazine and ammunition for the pistol. As the Glock pistols proved to be one of the best pistols in different models and different magazine sizes available on the market. The Glock magazines were suitable for the 5.7x9x19mm VBR ammunition, where highly reliable and could perfect fulfill the roll of interchangeability from PDW magazines with the Glock pistols. The VBR-Belgium PDW-Sidearm Upper contains the upper frame, the fixed threaded barrel, the retractable stock and the sight mounts. Important is that the barrel is fixed on the frame which allows to reach a accuracy to 100 meters. There is no barrel/lock space which can decrease accuracy at midrange. The threaded barrel allows the use of silencer/sound suppressor.   The retractable stock increased effectiveness at medium range and makes the PDW suited as a compact stand-off weapon that can respond to the threats of Kalashnikov rifles at close range. In this way, the VBR PDW can as a police weapon better suited than the Glock pistol or MP5. Different sight mounts can be fixed on the PDW-Sidearm Upper. Short Mil-Std-1913 “Picatinny” top rail system for mounting combat optics (optical sights). The underframe contains a double action trigger with a halfcocked position. This to allow to carry the PDW as a sidearm in a holster. Also, the internal hammer take part to retard the breech from opening easy and keep the pressure at safe level before the breech opens. The fire selector has two positions and is basically intend for singe or full auto fire. The typical front grip give the VBR PDW-Sidearm a rather futuristic shape, however it is special designed for practical us. At first the VBR PDW-Sidearm is intend to be carried in a holster and a fast draw, required an immediately accessible front grip and not something you first need to fold open before you can use it. Single hand use... Combat trigger brace use... Double hand use.... Stock and double hand use... Designer Mr. Rik Van Bruaene during the development of the VBR-Belgium PDW-Sidearm
